The UK Vertebroplasty Group (UKVG) and Dendrite Clinical Systems are pleased to announce the launch of the UK Vertebroplasty Registry. The key objective of the Registry is to provide a record of procedural data, complications and outcome scoring of back pain following vertebroplasty.
“The UK Vertebroplasty group (UKVG) is composed of clinicians from a multi-disciplinary field who have an interest in treating benign and malignant vertebral fractures using techniques such as vertebroplasty,” commented Dr Rob Campbell, Dept Radiology, Royal Liverpool Hospital, UK, and Register Lead. “The group was established as a forum for discussion between clinician’s issues such as procedural technique, evaluating emerging technologies and formulating processes of audit and research.”
It is hoped that the registry will provide data for audit in compliance with National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines as well as enable individual clinicians to access comparative data acquired from multiple centres, which can be used for patient documentation and appraisal. “This database has been established (through cooperation with Dendrite) to allow an anonymous record of data regarding patients who have been treated by vertebroplasty, to audit, on a national basis, data such as patient outcome, procedural complications etc,” added Dr Campbell.
Access to the database and the reports will be made freely available to all contributors and all data collected through the registry will remain the property of the contributing clinicians and the UKVG.

It is hoped that the Registry will gather sufficient data to allow the publication of a comprehensive report (published by Dendrite Clinical Systems) on the number and outcome/s of procedures. All contributors will receive a FREE report of vertebroplasty practice and outcomes.
“This is the first such national database for vertebroplasty in the UK and the UKVG would like to encourage all clinicians to use this database for the purposes of audit and peer review,” added Dr Campbell. “Future developments will include other percutaneous spinal therapeutic techniques such as Balloon Kyphoplasty and Vertebral Sacroplasty on the database registry.”
The Registry can be accessed using a standard web browser, allowing registrants to enter data without the need to install additional software or perform any complex system configurations. This web-based system allows the individual clinician to enter anonymised patient information onto a database whether in hospital, from an office-based practice or even at home. Clinicians can add as many cases as they wish and where possible they will be encouraged to put on retrospective data (if applicable).

Some of the key features on the Registry include:
• Comprehensive tracking of vertebroplasty procedures.
• Intuitive data capture with on line data validation.
• A “Download Document” option that allows users to download pdf. copies of the dataset questions, training manuals and other useful information.
• “Export my Data” – this feature allows users to extract their submitted data at any time to report/perform their own analysis. This ensures registrants have at all times easy access to their own data.
Dr Peter Walton, Managing director of Dendrite Clinical Systems, commented, “We are delighted to be collaborating with the UKVG on this very important project. We’re certain that the data gathered will be very valuable for clinical governance and clinical audit, and we would hope that the ensuing national database reports will stimulate debate about current vertebroplasty practice that will result in improvements in adherence to agreed national clinical guidelines and ultimately lead to improved outcomes for patients.”
